Ben Platt wins 'Best Actor' Tony, sings 'Waving Through a Window' Special

The House of Cards star was joined for the opening by USA talk show presenter Stephen Colbert and 2008 Tony's host Whoopi Goldberg, who also joked about her sexuality as she stepped out of a closet to make her big entrance.

The show, about an anxiety- racked adolescent whose social standing improves when he insinuates himself into the grieving family of a classmate who has killed himself, picked up six awards, including the Best Leading Actor In A Musical award for the twitching-and-tender talk-of-the-town performance by Ben Platt in the title role.

He addressed the musical's star, saying: "Ben Platt was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People".

Bette Midler praised the Broadway community after she won the Best Actress in a Musical Tony Award Sunday night for her performance in the revival of Hello, Dolly! On her 21st nomination, costume designer Jane Greenwood ("The Little Foxes") finally won her first competitive Tony.

The show won the Tony Award for "best musical", and its writers - Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Steven Levenson - all won Tony Awards. Back in February they were nearly the songwriters of the Best Picture with "La La Land".

"I've been there, I know the people, I know the heart of these people", said the former New York Ranger. "And we promised to pay him back if we ever had a show on Broadway". Oslo performer Michael Aronov won the Tony Award for best featured actor in a play, while Gavin Creel of Hello, Dolly! won best featured actor in a musical.

"It's more than I deserve", said Midler.

Midler said she had a "very tough schedule" but the experience had been "life-affirming and life-changing".

Midler, who beat fellow nominees including Christine Ebersole and Patti LuPone, told the orchestra to "shut that crap off" when they started to play her off.
