Belt and Road initiative lauded at SCO summit

Both India and Pakistan were on Friday admitted as SCO members. The regional pact comprises of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

He assured that China will contribute with an additional 10 million yuan ($1.47 million USD) to the SCO Secretariat in order to facilitate its work.

Sources in New Delhi, however, told DH that India attended the SCO summit as an observer and hence had no say on the content of the outcome document that was drafted by the officials of the member nations. "We will have to make coordinated efforts to counter the menace of terrorism", he said while adding that it was impossible to reach a solution till everybody made concerted efforts to control on radicalisation, terrorist recruitment, training and financing issues.

President of Afghanistan Muhammad Ashraf Ghani, President of Belarus Alexandar Lukashenko, President of Mangolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were also present during the summit.

The prime minister, during his stay in Astana, participated in 17th meeting of the Heads of State Council of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). "We look forward to working with member countries for progress, prosperity and connectivity in the region", said Pankaj Patel, President, Ficci. Xi's snub comes after deep disappointment and grief felt in China over the killings, after two Chinese teachers were kidnapped in Quetta last month and were reportedly murdered by Islamic State terrorists.

In addition to this, Pakistan also became the full member of SCO. Calling it one of the biggest violators of human rights and values, he said that the coordination between SCO countries is an important part of the fight against terrorism and extremism. India, one of the largest energy consuming countries in the world, is also likely to get greater access to major gas and oil exploration projects in Central Asia as numerous SCO countries have huge reserves of oil and natural gas. The agenda of the summit includes issues related to cooperation in fight against worldwide terrorism, security and the situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
