The governor's announcement comes a week after Republican President Donald Trump said he is withdrawing the United States from the Paris compact, an agreement involving almost 200 nations aimed at slowing the warming of the planet.

"I mean, the fact is that, still, his whole staff can not tell you whether or not he believes that climate change is a hoax", Kerry said in an interview with NBC News on Sunday. "And you would not pull out of Paris", he stated. Leaders of 211 cities have declared themselves "Climate Mayors" and promised to work toward the Paris targets.

The president made his announcement in a speech delivered at the White House Rose Garden.

In the aftermath of Donald Trump's announcement that the U.S.is leaving the Paris agreement, environmental advocates, including former Vice President Al Gore, have been very vocal about what they feel is a bad move on America's part. It's also not impossible that Trump might change his mind, given that some of his closest advisors (not least his own daughter Ivanka) strongly support the US's involvement in the Agreement - Trump himself has left the door open by saying that he's willing to seek "better terms" for the USA being part of the deal. Everybody knows he isn't going to do that because he doesn't believe in it.

One key aspect of Chris Wallace's questioning was how the Fox host wanted Pruitt to confirm or deny whether he believes that his boss, the President, is a climate change doubter, as many had insinuated in the past.

Trump has taken a hard stance on climate change; at times calling it a hoax by China.

The Paris Climate Agreement was negotiated by representatives of 195 countries in Paris and went into effect on November 4, 2016. It is increasingly making better business sense to invest in renewables as their cost continues to plummet, and Trump won't be able to single-handedly turn back the unstoppable tide of clean technology sweeping the US. The overall direction of travel worldwide in terms of decarbonisation and investment in renewables is clear, and it's now up to us and others to fill the vacuum left by the USA administration unless or until they realise that low-carbon is the future and dirty coal the past.

A group of 187 mayors, who represent more than 52 million Americans and some of the largest American cities, said in joint statement they "will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement". We will buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks.

Carney had joined many of these states last month in a letter to the president urging him to stay in the Paris Climate Agreement.
