India fireworks blaze kills 23 in Madhya Pradesh

"As of now the death toll in the incident has gone up to 25". The factory owner is on the run, said sources.

The condition of two of the eight injured, referred to Nagpur, is critical, the official said.

He said of the five other injured persons, three are being treated outside the state and two at a local hospital.

The death toll in yesterday's fire at a cracker factory in Kheri village of Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh, has gone up to 25. "Majority are presumed to be women and they were laborers who worked at the [fireworks] factory", district collector Bharat Yadav said.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister ShivrajSingh Chouhan‏ has condoled the loss of lives in the mishap.

According to district collector Bharat Yadav, the incident took place in Kheri village, which is almost 10 km from the district headquarters.

The injured are being provided a relief of Rs.50,000 each and treatment costs are being borne by the state government.

Reports said there is a suspicion that someone might have thrown a burning beedi (a type of cheap cigarette made of unprocessed tobacco wrapped in leaves) inside the factory, when the production was going on.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The factory is located at a considerable distance from the human settlement else the casualties and damage could have been much more.
