That prompted the former England skipper to remain put with his beloved Reds, but it appears Mourinho was not done there and he actually tried to sign Gerrard a further time at Chelsea, as well when he moved on to manage Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Gerrard infamously handed in a transfer request to force through the move to Chelsea, but memorably he inspired Liverpool to Champions League success that year as they stunned AC Milan in Istanbul.

And asked how close he was to linking up with the Portuguese, Gerrard replied: "It depends how close, close is!"

Speaking in an interview with German publication Kicker, Klopp stated that he had spoken with Gerrard about his ambitions for the future.

"Of course there was a lot of speculation around 2004/2005".

Gerrard told the Mirror: "He tried to sign me probably about five or six times during my career".

"I could have gone and played for him at different teams but I never did".

"What struck me first about Jurgen was the demands".

He has since returned to coach the club's Under-18s and is working closely with Jurgen Klopp, whom he describes as the most demanding manager in world football. He is a manager who won't do it any other way except his way.

"There's no negotiables when it comes down to hard work and running and winning your own individual battles".
