According to Goal.com, Tiote was rushed to a hospital in Beijing, but emergency services were unable to revive him.

"He was a good player, a good passer, but he was going to also do the ugly part of the game". He was the toughest player I've ever seen.

"There would definitely be a silent tribute, and we could stand up holding his picture or his shirt at the 24th minute and chant "Tiote", said Chen, adding that further details are still being discussed.

Tiote was a fan favourite at Newcastle thanks to his robust tackling in the centre of midfield.

Tiote left the Magpies during the January transfer window to join Chinese club Beijing Enterprises.

Confirming the news of his death, Tiote's representative, Emanuele Palladino, said, "It is with deep sadness that I confirm that my client Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training with his club Beijing Enterprises".

Ivory Coast teammate Gervinho, who plays for China's Hebei China Fortune, described Tiote as a "warrior" and a "champion".

He also helped complete one of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history when he volleyed Newcastle level after being 4-0 to Arsenal at half-time. In all the time that I have known him, he was a true professional, dedicated and above all, a great man.

Republic defender and Brighton defender Shane Duffy, who underwent life-saving surgery in May 2010 after suffering a lacerated liver in a freak training-ground accident, sent his best wishes to Tiote's friends and family.

Former England manager Steve McClaren, who managed him at Newcastle and Dutch side Twente, said Tiote had always wanted to make the money that would allow him to look after his family. My heart goes out to his family. A Newcastle legend taken too soon.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, a former team-mate of Tiote's at Belgian side Anderlecht when both players were starting their careers, tweeted: "I am speechless and so incredibly sad".
