The three-time Major victor will miss out after he was struck on the elbow by the practice swing of an amateur he was coaching.

Harrington revealed that he was struck on the elbow with a golf club wielded by an amateur player during a coaching session he was giving, leaving him scared for his own playing future.

Padraig Harrington may be rueing his decision to provide coaching assistance to an amateur, after a freaky incident resulted in the Irishman being forced to withdraw from the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

It was not immediately apparent how serious Harrington was when he added: "Thankfully nothing was broken, just 6 stitches".

The 45-year-old says he expects to be back in action in 12 days.

"My initial thought was that the elbow was shattered and it was the end to my competitive playing career".

"There's no truth in the rumor that it was the amateur's best strike of the day". He then finished in a tie for 31st in the Memorial Tournament last week.
