Bill Cosby's lawyers are proving quick to go on the attack as his sexual assault trial gets underway in suburban Philadelphia. He then ran upstairs to check on the frightened woman's children and found the 18-month-old dead on the couch and the bloodied and scared 5-year-old hiding in a closet.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A California woman arrested Tuesday in the stabbing death of her 18-month-old granddaughter had a lengthy history of mental illness and became distraught late previous year when she was separated from her young, special needs son, her relatives said.

She did not know what triggered Monday's attack, but she says her sister had long suffered mental health issues.

He took her downstairs where police had arrived, summoned by the mother's 911 call.

Darrington Clark is described as a black woman, about 5-foot-9 and 200 pounds, who may be driving a black four-door 2103 Hyundai Sonata. Ray Mendez said Monday.

The motive behind the 2005 crime, as well as Monday's incident, remain unknown. Distraught relatives who gathered at the scene later Monday declined to comment. Clark is a fugitive, being sought by authorities who say a 6-month-old girl was slain and her sister and mother were critically wounded in a stabbing they suspect was carried out by Clark, the little girls' grandmother, in an attack Monday morning, June 5, 2017, in the family's Colton, Calif., home.

"She was shaking, petrified", Hill said. "We don't know. We're just asking God to just keep her safe".

They "immediately decided" they couldn't wait for paramedics. She says a police officer picked up the wounded older child in his arms to drive her to a hospital.

Mendez, the Colton police spokesman, said police will do that in life-or-death situations.

"She was stabbed everywhere", Williams said. "My heart I feel like my soul left my body because this is disgusting". Authorities believe the grandmother, her daughter, and the two granddaughters all lived together at the residence. The toddler's 5-year-old sister and her mother were initially transported to a hospital in critical condition, their conditions were later upgraded to stable.

A grandmother wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing of her 18-month-old granddaughter and the wounding of her daughter and grandchild Monday in Colton has been captured, police said Tuesday. Neither child was seriously injured. At the time the children's mother was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Jail records show Darrington-Clark being booked into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $1 million. It is unclear why she was released. She was expected to be confined for 34 years to life, with progress reports on her condition due every six months, according to a report from her sentencing in early 2007.

A longtime friend of Darrington Clark told the Press-Enterprise she was released a few years ago.

"I'm sad", she said. "It was never anything about her trying to hurt us".
