A father and son died in the crash of a small plane near Thousand Oaks, Calif., fire officials said.

James Harlan, 57, and his son, Dylan Harlan, 15, were declared dead at the scene, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.

The father and son were the only two people on the plane, which crashed on the edge of the Santa Rosa Valley after taking off from Camarillo Airport.

"Witnesses described seeing the plane flying just above treetops in the area before it went down in a horse arena", the sheriff's department said in a written statement.

Crews from Southern California Edison responded to the scene after first responders became concerned that the plane may have struck nearby high-voltage power lines.

The Ventura County Fire Department says the crash happened Sunday afternoon in Santa Rosa Valley. No one on the ground was injured.

Officials of the Federal Aviation administration and the national Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, the second in the country in four days.
