Wonder Woman's Record-Breaking Box Office Debut

Unusually for a superhero film, the majority of Wonder Woman's audience was female.

Wonder Woman debuted in first place at the domestic box office, breaking the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time for a female director. The worst of which came from Vulture's David Edelstein; the writer has garnered a fair amount of negative attention for his scathing, salivating review of the film, in which he objectifies Gal Gadot (the film's star) and accuses positive critics of "grading on a big curve" (um, ouch!).

Meanwhile, it was claimed last month by a Twitter user who attended a promotional event in Shanghai that Zack Snyder - who has directed other DCEU features such as the upcoming ensemble movie "Justice League" - had told the audience that Warner Bros. had already started planning the "Wonder Woman" sequel.

"Wonder Woman" also soars overseas, raking in $122.5 million internationally. While "Wonder Woman" didn't match the box-office might of "Batman v. Superman" (a $166 million opening) or "Suicide Squad" ($133.7 million), it was much better received than those roundly derided releases.

She shared: "The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right".

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales moved to the third place with an estimated Dollars 21.6 million.

The animated family-friendly action adventure based on the children's novel series Captain Underpants by Day Pilkey.

The latest film in Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe exceeded expectations at the box office, bringing in $103.1 million for its opening in North America this weekend. Thus far, the season's only blockbuster has been its first: "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2".

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at USA and Canadian theaters, according to comScore.

The fifth installment of the Pirates franchise has earned United States dollars 386.6 million to date internationally for a global total combined with North America of USD 501.2 million. Where available, the latest worldwide numbers also are included.
