Michael McCarthy has been charged in the 2015 death of his former girlfriend's daughter with opening statements beginning today.

After allegedly saying that Bella was a "demon", McCarthy then allegedly wrapped Bella's body in a bag and put her in the refrigerator. McCarthy was charged with the child's first-degree murder, while Rachelle was charged as an accessory to murder after the fact. His defense attorney Jonathan Shapiro said Rachelle was "probably" the killer and McCarthy had no knowledge of the death until his arrest Sep. "The prosecution's case rests entirely upon the uncorroborated and unbelievable testimony from Rachelle Bond". He has pleaded not-guilty to first degree murder charges.

Shapiro stated that McCarthy did not have anything to do with Bella Bond's death. She will testify against her ex-boyfriend McCarthy as part of a plea agreement.

Bond's body washed up on Deer Island in a trash bag and was found by a woman walking her dog. A zebra-print blanket and polka dot leggings were also found in the bag, located just east of Boston's Logan International Airport. The girl was known only as Baby Doe for months until she was identified by authorities as Bella Bond. Tips poured in to investigators as to her identity, but the killing remained a mystery for months. That friend went to the police, leading to McCarthy's arrest and the world learning the little girl's name. He reportedly had an interest in alternative spirituality and the supernatural, which had impressed her. "He came back a short time later empty-handed, and she knew what he'd done with her daughter's body".

But McCarthy's lawyers rejected the claim that he killed Bella because she was possessed by demons.

CBS News reported that during the opening statements, prosecutors alleged that McCarthy threatened that he would kill Rachelle if she told anyone he had killed Bella. He called her 'honey, ' 'good girl, ' " the Boston Globe reports.

"He knew the truth - that he had killed Bella Bond and dumped her body - would not set him free", Deakin said.

"She was projecting her own delusions onto Michael McCarthy", Shapiro said.

Instead, Rachelle Bond was the one obsessed with the occult, Shapiro said.
