James surpasses Jordan as playoffs scoring leader

He said at the morning shootaround that the Cavs had to stick to the game plan against a Celtics team that showed the fight the Cavs expected.

"We all need to soak this up".

The Cavaliers beat Boston in Game 5 to advance to the NBA Finals, where they'll face off against the Golden State Warriors. "I don't really have anything to say". Game 1 of the Finals is at 9 p.m. June 1 in Oakland, Calif.

The worst No. 1 seed in history, apparently, was good enough to make it to the Conference Finals and earn the respect of the defending champions while playing without their lone All-Star in Thomas. Will they become the first team in National Basketball Association history to go undefeated in a postseason? "You saw that in Game 3 against Boston".

"Anytime I'm linked to any of the greats, even the greatest, in Mike, it's an honor", James said at Cavaliers shootaround on Thursday. James, who was 27 points behind Jordan coming into the game, went ahead of Jordan in the third quarter with a three-pointer from the left wing and now sits at 5,994 points in his postseason career.

INSKEEP: That gave LeBron James 5,989 career points in the playoffs, two more than Michael Jordan, the most all time. "Just day by day", Kerr said to The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears when asked of his plans. A title also lifts him from the depths of no-ring land, where legends like Karl Malone, John Stockton and Charles Barkley are unfairly stashed. "It's just my personal goal to keep me motivated - that's all".

It was a historic night at TD Garden. They did it back home against the Wizards in Game 7 of the conference semifinals following a crushing last-second road defeat in Game 6 (no thanks to an incredible trey from John Wall). In 34 minutes of action, James finished with 35 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. He was just 21 in his first playoff game, but was well-prepared at that point to lead his teams on lengthy runs, whereas Jordan didn't get his Bulls out of the first round until he was 25.

"I enjoy every win", Lue said. "Only because I feel we have some unfinished business from last season". There hasn't been a Game 7 overtime since in the Final.

"Playing in this league, you can't take anything for granted", Warriors guard Stephen Curry said.

The Warriors swept San Antonio Spurs 4-0 in the Western Conference finals. He also sustained a strained left thigh in the third quarter but returned to the game. If Curry or Thompson struggles then Durant is there to be that third scorer and let Draymond Green focus on the defensive end.

"I think I fell in love with the game because of Mike, but when you're growing up and seeing Michael Jordan, it's nearly like a god, so I never did believe I could be Mike".

"This team is a insane team", Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said after Thursday's game. Now it is official, the Celtics season is over.

"It's pretty cool to think that in three weeks you've got the No. 1 pick in the draft", Stevens said. "But I definitely wasn't trying to hear that at that point in time".

This is the first time the same two teams have faced off in three consecutive NBA Finals, and it's the matchup that most NBA fans - and Warriors majority owner Joe Lacob - wanted. Less is expected of him, but he has pulled two disappearing acts in two consecutive Finals series.
