The icon started returned to the stage after a 15 year hiatus and kicked things off with her smash hits, "Believe" and "If I Could Turn Back Time".

Later on she showed up in one of Cher's iconic stage costumes and danced along to Cher's performance from the audience.

Accepting the award, she said: "I want to thank my mum because when I was really young my mum said you're not going to be the smartest, you're not going to be the prettiest, you're not going to be the most talented but you're going to be special".

She noted she was told early on that she never was the most lovely or the most talented, but she was special and added that "luck has so much to do with my success with a little bit of something thrown in".

Ahead of a moment's silence, Dan Reynolds, singer of the rock band Imagine Dragons, paid tribute to Cornell as a "prolific songwriter, a legendary performer, a singer who had a voice for the ages and a philanthropist".

The crowd gave Dion a standing ovation after she performed the song with clips of the Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet romance playing on screens around her.

Few 71-year-olds in the music industry could have pulled off the performance that Cher did on Sunday night.

Show hosts Ludacris and Vanessa Hudgens immediately praised the performance. What did you think of her performance?

She teamed the daring look - which she previously wore in the song's music video - with thigh-high boots and a leather jacket.

"I felt like the luckiest guy in the room 'cause Gwen was here with me anyway", he said.
