United, who face Ajax Amsterdam in the Europa League final on Wednesday, finished sixth.

Paul Pogba added a second as United won 2-0 and a delighted Mitchell felt playing alongside so many other players from the youth set-up was "mad".

On an afternoon that some suggested could be his final competitive United appearance at Old Trafford, the 31-year-old received a standing ovation as he was replaced by 16-year-old Angel Gomes - the first Premier League player to have been born in the 21st century.

When asked if he thought the youngsters were ready, the Portuguese coach told the press: "All together? No".

"I've dreamed about it so many times so, for it to come true today, I'm delighted", he enthused.

"I think one young player can play in the middle of a good structure, a dynamic structure, an experienced structure, yes".

"It's the only positive thing".

"I got hugely criticised for it and Crystal Palace got up there and then fell away and that continued into the next season".

"I'm just happy to play and want to thank the manager".

"The age of players isn't important, the quality is important". "I will bring three or four of the first team players to play in each half, where we can give a little bit of experience to the team but also save them all for Wednesday".

"We were there past year and had as many games as they have now".

"They are two wonderful goalkeepers and two great people as well; they're good friends".

"They're a Champions League team, they come from the Champions League".

On prize money meaning the game still has significance: "The budget will get bigger if we can go up a couple of places". I spoke to them.

"I don't really think we need too many reminders (of the prize money involved)".

"You think you know the players, but you don't".

"I will be picking a team that I think will perform well". Dear Jose Mourinho, it is time you wake up and smell the coffee rather than indulging in lawyer like defence. Anybody with knocks or problems, I will not play. Like United this campaign, the Reds made the final of the League Cup and the Europa League, although failed to win in both finals.

Wayne Rooney's Manchester United future may not be decided until next month with no meetings scheduled between Jose Mourinho and his captain after the Europa League final this week.
