However, the Post said that the individual in question is close with President Trump.

Earlier Friday, The New York Times reported that Trump told top Russian officials that Comey was a "nut job" and that his termination relieved "great pressure".

The report was published as Trump traveled to Saudi Arabia on the first leg of a trip overseas that the White House hopes will shift attention away from the political firestorm triggered by his firing last week of former FBI Director James Comey.

Mr Comey will certainly be asked about encounters that precipitated his firing, including a January dinner in which, Mr Comey has told associates, Mr Trump asked for his loyalty.

"I just fired the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation". The newspaper also reported that the president had expressed his wishes that Comey could let go of the investigation into former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

The report cited notes from a May 10 Oval Office meeting - the day after Mr Trump fired Mr Comey. "He was insane, a real nut job", Trump said, according to the Times, which cited a document summarizing the meeting and read to it by a US official.

"I faced great pressure because of Russian Federation".

Trump met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russia's ambassador to Washington in the Oval Office the day after he fired Comey.

In a statement in response, White House press secretary Sean Spicer did not deny the report, but said Mr Comey had created "unnecessary pressure" on the US' ability to conduct diplomacy with Russian Federation.

The investigation is now in the hands of a special counsel, as well as multiple congressional committees.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer did not dispute the account. The White House initially said that Trump did so based on a separate memo written by Rosenstein; however, Trump himself later said that he was going to fire Comey regardless of the recommendation, and cited the "Russia thing" as something that was on his mind when he made a decision to let Flynn go.
