After getting blown out by the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1, the Boston Celtics would have been better off forfeiting Game 2 and saving themselves the embarrassment.

Boston actually avoided a very early knockout punch from Cleveland.

Celtics team president Danny Ainge, in a text message to ESPN's Jeff Goodman, said Thomas wouldn't have been able to play even if the Cleveland series was competitive. The Cavaliers were up 72-31 at halftime and they never relinquished their lead in the second half.

Meanwhile, Stevens was more than ready to move past Game 2, as well. What he couldn't see was James galloping down the court like a cheetah hunting a wounded calf.

"His chase-down blocks, the one he had on Avery [Bradley] was unbelievable".

Contrary to their usual temperament, the Celtics seemed clearly rattled early into the game, with Thomas and Stevens giving away easy technicals half way through the 2nd quarter as well as the rest of their roster looking clearly shaken up and out of the game, already down 31 in the middle of the second, ending up as a 41 point deficit at the half, down 72 - 31, the worst ever deficit in National Basketball Association playoff history, thanks to a surreal clutch fade on the buzzer from JR Smith to seal the record. The only things of note for the Celtics were negatives.

I think it was about the five minute mark into the second quarter when I realized what was going on, the Cavs lead had already ballooned to 25-plus when I looked over to my friend (who is not a Cavaliers or Celtics fan) watching the game with me. They had as many made baskets as turnovers.

'It was a good 48-minute game for us on both ends of the ball.

"I don't want to put that on any one guy", he said. The guys are really down.

The Celtics played the second half without Isaiah Thomas due to a strained right hip. The damage had been done. "He's always been ready, and he always stays ready", Boston coach Brad Stevens said of Green, who logged 13:44 and scored 11 points off the bench in Game 1. I know I do.

Still, there was no answer. "Point blank, period", he said.

"I thought he looked much different in the first half".

The english language can not possibly hold enough words to adequately describe the failure of the Celtics in Game 2 Friday evening.

There is one adjective, though, that you won't hear come from the Cleveland locker room. They're not on 'Space Jam.' Like, they lace up their shoes just like us.

"When we're blitzing and rotating and scrambling, he's the best we can have on the back line", Lue explained. I also told you we had another level.

Heading into the game, James was averaging 34.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game in these playoffs. Best of luck to them with that. We had a few bad turnovers offensively. "We have to get focused for Game 3".

We can basically consider this series over, right? "But we like where we're headed and the direction we're headed right now". Love continued the run when he converted a three-pointer and threw down a driving dunk that was set up by a pass from Irving.
