The incident took place in Shobhapur village in Rajnagar block. Police officials said that when a police team arrived at the scene, the agitating villagers started throwing stones at the police.

"We have received information that six people were beaten to death by mobs at two different places over child theft rumors yesterday", a police official in Ranchi told Xinhua.

Last week two persons were beaten to death and as many injured by a mob on suspicion that they were child lifters in Uranium township of Jadugora in East Singhbhum district. They stopped the vehicle around midnight and attacked the men but three of them managed to escape.

Police denied reports that a number of child abduction cases were reported in the region as part of trafficking rackets. Naim later died at the Seraikela subdivisional hospital. There has been a spike in mob violence in the past few months across India, after self-appointed cow protectors gained legitimacy under certain indulgent state governments, to act as vigilantes and deliver mob justice to people they suspected as cattle smugglers.

When stopped by Rajnagar OC Tuleswar Khushwaha, accompanied by an ASI and a constable, the mob also assaulted them and set fire to their jeep.

"The tribal villagers cornered the men and tempers ran high after they came to know they were outsiders, belonging to another district", he said.

Despite the fact that the victims of the mob lynching were only Muslims, police insisted there is no communal angle to it. Earlier this week, three others had been lynched amid child-lifting allegations.
