Even Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union - which sued the FBI numerous time during Mueller's tenure as director - said, "We applaud the selection of Robert Mueller", adding: "We are confident that he can and will carry out an independent investigation".

On Wednesday, the Department of Justice appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller to be the special counsel in charge of the Russian Federation investigation.

SCOTT HORSLEY, BYLINE: Rosenstein said in a statement that he's determined that based on the unique circumstances here, the public interest requires him to put this investigation under the authority of a person who can exercise a degree of independence from the normal chain of command.

"There isn't any judicial review of impeachment decisions, so Congress just needs to be satisfied that Trump committed high crimes or misdemeanors", Jens David Ohlin, a law professor and associate dean at Cornell Law School told AFP.

The administration's use of Rosenstein to justify Comey's dismissal made it imperative that the deputy attorney general withdraw from the Trump-Russia investigation.

While the White House initially cited a Justice Department recommendation and Comey's very public handling of the Clinton email investigation as reasons, those explanations quickly shifted.

In a statement released by the White House, Trump said: "As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity". Trump fired Comey last week.

The White House on Tuesday sought to tamp down the controversy with national security adviser HR McMaster telling reporters that what the president shared with the Russian officials "was wholly appropriate to that conversation and is consistent with the routine sharing of information between the president and any leaders with whom he's engaged". Appointed by Republican President George W. Bush, he became Federal Bureau of Investigation director one week before the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Both congressmen have criticised Mr Trump and did not vote for him in 2016 presidential election. The counsel is not required to consult with or keep informed the attorney general or deputy attorney generals on the course of the probe. And Sen. Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican who chairs the Senate intelligence committee, called the appointment a "good decision".

Putin dismissed the US politicians, whom he did not identify, as either being "stupid" or "dangerous and unscrupulous" who are wittingly "causing the damage to their own country".

"Israel has full confidence in our intelligence-sharing relationship with the United States and looks forward to deepening that relationship in the years ahead under President Trump", said Israel's ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer.

Special Counsel Mueller has agreed to resign from his private law firm in order to avoid any conflicts of interest with firm clients or attorneys. There is a broader probe into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, as well as a separate investigation into Mr Flynn.

Democrats called the choice of Mr. Mueller inspired.

"I think the country deserves a woman or a man who is devoid of political taint", Gowdy said on Fox News.
