"Once an official statement regarding Nicky's condition is released by the hospital or Nicky's family, a further update from the team will be issued", Hayden's Red Bull Honda WSBK team said in a statement.

The American, who has been racing for Red Bull Honda's World Superbike team, collided with a vehicle near Rimini Wednesday.

Doctors placed the 2006 MotoGP champion into a medically induced coma, the BBC reported.

Casey Stoner has sent his best wishes to MotoGP racer Nicky Hayden who is in a critical condition with severe brain damage.

Hayden, who was in Italy following a race at nearby Imola, was transported to a local hospital following the incident on the Rimini coast, before being transferred to Cesena.

"Nicky Hayden's clinical conditions remain extremely serious", the Bufalini hospital of Cesena said in a statement. Italian media quoted the hospital as saying on Wednesday that Hayden had suffered a cerebral edema and lower body fractures and surgery had not been possible immediately because of his condition.

Hayden's fiancé Jackie, along with his brother Tommy Hayden and his mother Rose Hayden, are at the hospital supporting him while he continues to battle for his life.

"We were teammates in his rookie year in 2003, when he was a young guy making his debut in his first European experience".

He won three races in a career from 2003-2015, before switching to Superbike full-time, although he made two starts in MotoGP previous year to fill in for injured Honda rider Jack Miller. After the race we shook hands and hugged.

"Come on Nicky, we're all with you", added the 38-year-old.

Hayden was last seen in the MotoGP championship in Spain in September 2016. In the MotoGP, he ran 218 Grand Prix races with three wins and 28 podium places. The Superbike World Championship says the incident occurred Wedn.
