Chelsea Manning released from prison

Former president Barack Obama commuted the final 28 years of Manning's 35-year sentence in the final days of his second term in office. "Whatever is ahead of me is far more important than the past".

The Oklahoma native was convicted of 20 counts including theft, computer fraud and six violations of act. The leak, which Manning said she provided "to show the true cost of war", is considered to be the largest of its kind in USA history.

In 2009 and 2010, Manning admitted that she-he at the time-smuggled out several SD disks with reams of classified information, including contents of Significant Actions files, or SigActs, which detail military actions on the ground in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Critics said Manning's leaks laid bare some of the country's most-sensitive secrets and endangered information sources, prompting the US State Department to help some of those people move to protect their safety.

Following multiple suicide attempts, stints of solitary confinement, alleged bullying at an all-male prison and being denied medications for her gender transition, U.S.

"PVT Manning is statutorily entitled to medical care while on excess leave in an active duty status, pending final appellate review", the Army said in a statement Wednesday. "I am humbled to fight alongside such a fierce advocate for justice".

Manning was sentenced to 35 years in jail in 2013 after being convicted of numerous charges, including espionage.

Manning sent this photograph of herself in a wig and makeup to her supervisor in April 2010, before her gender reassignment surgery. "She has repeatedly been punished for trying to survive and now is being repeatedly punished for trying to die", Chase Strangio, her attorney, wrote in an email to the Associated Press. "Freedom used to be something that I dreamed of but never allowed myself to fully imagine".

Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst, was known as Bradley Manning at the time of the trial but came out as transgender the day after being sentenced, sparking a media frenzy.

While Graham was upset by Manning's release, he campaigned for the release of Pastor Saeed Abedini from an Iranian prison.

"Chelsea Manning is the LGBTQ movement's greatest-ever anti-war activist and whistleblower about government crimes, and yet she was shunned by virtually every large LGBTQ non-profit", Thayer said.

Manning left Fort Leavenworth at around 2 a.m. local time, the U.S. Army confirmed to Fox News.

After leaving Fort Leavenworth, a military prison in Kansas, Manning has clearly been making the most of her freedom - posting a picture of herself enjoying a slice of pizza.

Chelsea Manning is a free woman.

She was not able to flee overseas like Edward Snowden, who in 2013 released documents showing that the NSA was sweeping up United States citizens' communications metadata.
