Details of his death have not been disclosed, however it is known that he died in Detroit after performing with his longtime band Soundgarden.

An autopsy conducted Thursday determined Cornell's cause of death: he hanged himself.

USA singer Chris Cornell, grunge rock pioneer and the former lead singer of Audioslave and Soundgarden, has died at the age 52, his publicist said on Thursday (May 18), and police in Detroit said they are treating the death as a possible suicide.

A family friend called 911 around midnight Thursday after he went to check on Cornell and found the musician "unresponsive" on the bathroom floor at the MGM Grand hotel, Detoit police spokesman Michael Woody said. The family friend reportedly forced his way in and found Cornell with a band wrapped around his neck. From the global success he achieved as the founder and lead vocalist of Soundgarden, to fronting the GRAMMY-nominated supergroup, Audioslave, Chris' extraordinary talent will forever live on and inspire fellow musicians and fans worldwide.

Jimmy Page added, "RIP Chris Cornell".

Cornell was on tour and performed Wednesday night in Detroit with Soundgarden.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's office will make an official determination about the cause of death. Though, some local news outlets in Detroit have quoted police as saying it was an apparent suicide.

"I've lost a lot of young, brilliant friends, people that I thought were very inspired", he told Rolling Stone in 2015.

"I'm so shocked to wake up and hear about the sudden passing of Chris Cornell", Carson Daly tweeted. This band has won two Grammy Awards, both in 1995 for Best Metal Performance ("Spoonman") and Best Hard Rock Performance ("Black Hole Sun"). Thinking of his family tonight!

Singer-songwriter Chris Cornell has passed away at the age of 52.

Soundgarden broke up in 1997 and Cornell in 2001 joined members of Rage Against The Machine to form Audioslave, which earned acclaim with its self-titled album. "It's what we missed when we weren't a band".
