Incidentally, Karthik was a part of the Indian team which won the Champions Trophy, back in 2013.

Wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has replaced injured Manish Pandey in the squad for ICC Champions Trophy that is scheduled to begin from June 1.

On the domestic circuit this season, Pandey, in the Ranji Trophy, had piled up 216 runs in 4 matches at an average of 36, his highest score being 75.

Middle-order batsman Manish Pandey, who picked up an injury during a training session with the Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday, has been ruled out of next month's Champions Trophy, a release from the Board of Control for Cricket in India said on Thursday.

Karthik was out for a duck in Gujarat Lions' loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad to sign off on their IPL existence, but he made 40, 35 not out and 65 in his three previous innings at the Twenty20 tournament.

Karthik, who will soon be celebrating his 32nd birthday, scored 607 runs during Tamil Nadu's victorious Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, including a century in the final.

Team India will go into the tournament as the defending champions. India were then playing under MS Dhoni and will now play under Virat Kohli who was given the full-time captaincy in the limited overs format after Dhoni stepped down from the position earlier this year.

India's group also includes Sri Lanka and South Africa, apart from Pakistan.
