The film (directed by Nora Twomey) employs hand-drawn animation techniques similar to those that helped score two GKIDS pictures - The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea - Oscar nods in 2010 and 2015, respectively.

Since it was founded in 2008, GKIDS has had a major impact on the USA animation landscape by discovering and distributing a slate of prestigious, critically acclaimed, independent feature animation from around the world and garnering an unprecedented nine Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature. Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict and helping their families to survive in those conditions.

"I am proud to be a part of this lovely film with this timely and very important subject matter".

The Breadwinner is slated for a fall 2017 release in North America.

"I know they will do justice to the richness, creativity and strength of Afghan culture and to little girls like Parvana".

"I hope this film is able to bring this discussion to a broader audience", Jolie adds. "As much as it is an important and very meaningful film, it also stands on its own as a great piece of art", she said in her statement.

GKIDS' Eric Beckman and David Jesteadt are executive producing, along with Angelina Jolie who said, "I am proud to be a part of this attractive film with this timely and very important subject matter". The film will be presented to worldwide buyers at the Cannes Marché du Film next week. "They have breathed life into the characters and paid respect to the subject matter and to a country where women often struggle".

The Breadwinner is adapted from Deborah Ellis' young adult novel of the same name. Ellis has donated more than $1 million in book royalties to Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan.
