He said the decision could come before he leaves Friday for Saudi Arabia on his first foreign trip as president.

"The prospect that a tape exists of the president's dinner conversation with former FBI Director James Comey is interesting not because a president taping conversations is inherently nefarious", she explained.

Schiff said that what disturbed him most about Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosensetin's memo, suggesting to terminate Comey, was the fact it was addressed to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

A person familiar with the process says U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson is among at least six candidates set to interview Saturday at the Justice Department.

Among those interviewed was Adam Lee, special agent in charge of the FBI's Richmond, Virginia, office.

So far 14 people have emerged as candidates.

While some sources have said Comey requested more resources for the Russian Federation investigation only days before being fired, one of his associates told news outlets this was not true and the investigation had no shortage of resources.

On Sunday, Graham said multiple times that he does not believe the president is a target of investigations into whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated with the Kremlin, one facet of the various probes being conducted by the FBI and House and Senate intelligence committees. "And that's what we want for the FBI", Trump said.

While Washington is still reeling about President Trump's dismissal of FBI Director James Comey, the majority of his supporters think it was a good call.

55-year-old Michael Garcia, an associate judge on New York's highest court, and John Cornyn, the second most senior Republican in the Senate are also said to be in the running.

Former Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., who chaired the House Intelligence Committee while in Congress, also met with Sessions and Rosenstein.

Three other people are expected to interview on Saturday afternoon. That being said, though 90 percent of respondents were aware of Trump's firing of Comey, a total of a third said they didn't know enough about the story to have an opinion, which seems like a lot of people either not paying much attention or still unwilling to form an opinion, despite the wall-to-wall media coverage of the White House crisis. Rogers was endorsed over the weekend by the FBI Agents Association, which represents rank-and-file agents. His allegiance appears to remain with Comey; in fact, McCabe in congressional testimony Thursday directly contradicted a White House claim that "the rank and file of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had lost confidence in their director".

Trump's administration - embroiled in a deepening crisis over the sacking and its shifting explanation of events - is interviewing the first candidates for the post on Saturday, US media reported.

Fisher formerly served as assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Criminal Division.

"The attorney general was supposed to have recused himself from anything involving Russian Federation, and here he is, recommending the firing of the top cop doing the Russian Federation investigation, in clear violation of what he, the attorney general, had committed to doing".

Appointing a special prosecutor and choosing a new FBI director are linked, Schumer said, "because they're both involved in one of the most serious investigations we've seen in a very long time".

Fisher faced resistance from Democrats during her confirmation for the Justice job over her alleged participation in discussions about detention policies at the Guantanamo Bay facility in Cuba.
