Meanwhile, the BJP has called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Kannur district and Mahe on Saturday in protest against the murder of an RSS worker near Payyanur.

The deceased has been identified as Choorakkad Biju (34) of nearby Kakkampara.

The retaliation of Dhanaraj's murder was so swift that within hours an RSS worker CK Ramachandran was stabbed to death and crude bombs were hurled on site.

On July 11, 2016, CV Dhanaraj was hacked to death in the courtyard of his house near Payyannur town. The incident took place around 3 pm. "But we believe that his political rivals may have murdered him", Payyannur police said. Dhanraj was hacked to death in July past year.

The police have cordoned off the area and probe has begun. A press release issued by the party district office said that milk supply, newspaper distribution, and other essential services were exempted from the hartal. Four RSS workers were arrested for his murder immediately. On Friday, BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan expressed shock at the brutal murder of Biju and decried surging "Leftist terror" in the state.

The Kannur CPI (M) district secretariat condemned the incident and denied the allegation that its workers were involved in it. The party demanded that a comprehensive inquiry be conducted for nabbing the culprits behind the murder. "Since the government has failed to curb the violence, AFSPA should be imposed in Kannur to maintain law-and-order", he said, adding that a memorandum would be submitted to the Governor in this regard.

He also claimed that the ruling party in Kerala had "unilaterally broken" the peace accord. Clamping of the Act was the sole option for ensuring law and order in the district, he said.
