Tesla Australia have published a blog post detailing the benefits users can expect from a solar roof, most notable the ability to turn sunlight into power without an electricity company.

Have you been waiting impatiently to place your order for a Tesla Solar Roof, the innovative new product that uses glass tiles with solar cells embedded in them in place of conventional rooftop solar panels (or conventional roof tiles)? Thus they enable homeowners to harness energy from the sun all day without having to install any additional panels.

Tesla opened up pre-orders and announced pricing information for its Solar Roof product on Wednesday. However, there has been a slight delay.

The company will start shipping and installation of solar roofs later this year in the US and in 2018 for other countries.

Two designs of the tile - "Textured" and "Smooth" - will be available first while "Tuscan" and "Slate" designs are to follow later in 2018. Installation of the energy-generating tiles are set to begin this summer in the USA, and in 2018 for areas outside of the country. All things considered, the total cost of the solar roof should be lower than the cost of a regular roof. Musk said Tesla recommends up to 70% of roof tiles to have solar generating capacity and the others to be dormant. In any case, Tesla wants to have a panel of offers that is as complete as possible to win in the solar market and has the merit of innovating with this kind of solution or with its Powerwall. "I think the aesthetics are really that good".

"Although the cost of our solar tiles is more expensive up front, it can be more than offset by the value of energy the tiles produce", it said in its announcement made on Thursday. "This is a better product at a slightly better price", said Musk.

Tesla says that its SolarCity subsidiary will begin installing the first systems in California in June and will then spread to other areas.

The price has not been released, although it's expected to be substantially higher than a traditional roof with solar panels. In the meantime, Tesla's stock closed at $325.22 witnessing an increase of $3.96 or 1.23%. Just as important: The march of technology means that when Tesla's roof has its number come up, an even better one will be waiting that will probably save you more money, and this will also include a battery to store power when you're not using it.
