He had become the first men's tennis player in the Open era to win the same title 10 times at the Monte Carlo Masters last Sunday.

Just seven short days ago, the famous centre court at the Monte-Carlo Country Club spelled out No10 in ball kids to recognition of the remarkable Rafael Nadal.

"These young players have a lot of character so I took to the court with respect, perhaps too much, but in the second set I started dominating".

Defending champion Nadal eased past Hyeon Chung of South Korea 7-6 (1), 6-2.

Murray was broken in the very first game, gifting Thiem the advantage with a tame forehand.

Nadal said of Chung: "He has good potential, great backhand and very quick".

The test of Dominic's physical stamina and mental toughness was present in the Barcelona Final as he faced the "King of Clay"-Rafael Nadal".

Nadal, who will be playing in his 106th career final, has won Barcelona crowns in 2005-09, 2011-13 and 2016.

Andy Murray of Britain gestures during his match against Dominic Thiem of Austria in a semifinal match at the Barcelona Open Tennis Tournament in Barcelona, Spain, Saturday, April 29, 2017. He saved the only break point he conceded to Thiem at the "Rafa Nadal" center court.

"Unbelievable feeling", said Nadal.

The win was a 16th in succession for Bedene, who had secured back-to-back titles on the second-tier Challenger Tour before coming through qualifying in Budapest and going on to upset second seed Ivo Karlovic in the quarter-finals.

But Nadal, returning to top form at age 30, upped his intensity at the crucial moment and Thiem crumbled with three errors in the 10th game to give away the only break of the set.

Aljaz Bedene's fantastic run of results on clay keeps getting better as he advanced to his first ATP Final and will now play the No.1 seed Lucas Pouille tomorrow.

The former world number one was forced to skip his favourite major a year ago in an injury-hit campaign and his coach described the struggles his nephew had with motivating himself to come back.
