In a recent survey conducted by the VA, only 61 percent of veterans said they could get a medical appointment for primary care when they needed one. A similar service was also launched with the VA in Palo Alto, California previous year.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced that it is testing a new program with CVS Pharmacy that will allow some veterans to use their federal health benefits at CVS "MinuteClinics". "Partnerships between VA and private providers are essential to delivering care in the diverse geographies where Veterans live", he said. "Our No. 1 priority is getting veterans access to care when and where they need it", said Baligh Yehia, MD, the deputy undersecretary for health for community care, VA.

The agreement may help to make it easier for veterans to access care for low-level complaints without having to work through the VA's notoriously lengthy appointment-setting process.

While President Donald Trump was busy signing an executive order to keep Veterans Choice alive, Secretary David Shulkin's team was busy implementing the new pilot in Phoenix, Arizona. Their health records will be shared electronically with the clinic. Senator John McCain says, "I've long believed that Veterans in need of routine health care services should not have to wait in line for weeks to get an appointment".

"We're committed to providing top-notch care to the area's Veterans and this relationship will allow us to do so in locations and at times that are convenient for the VA's patients".

In 2014, The Department of Veterans Affairs in Phoenix gained the national spotlight.

And Tobias Barker, the chief medical officer of CVS MinuteClinic, told the AP he hopes the new program can be one of several solutions to providing medical care to America's veterans. The VA says this will allow patients to make informed choices about when and where they receive their health care. Nurse practitioners for MinuteClinic can write prescriptions and give common immunizations.
