He was released by the Patriots just hours after he was arrested.

Police claimed Hernandez arranged Lloyd's murder with help from accomplices after Lloyd spoke with people Hernandez didn't like at a Boston bar. Hernandez had been housed in a single cell in a general population unit at the maximum-security state prison in Shirley. Simpson was found innocent and set free; Hernandez was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.

Hernandez's death has officially been ruled a suicide. He apparently tried to jam the cell door to prevent guards from opening it and hanged himself with a bedsheet tied to a window, Fallon said.

Hernandez was diagnosed with only one concussion during his time with the Patriots, according to the injury reports teams file each week.

Aaron Hernandez wrote a popular Bible verse - John 3:16 - on his forehead using a red marker pen before committing suicide in his MA jail cell, according to reports. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life", the verse reads.

February 5, 2012: Hernandez is a key player for the Patriots as they roll undefeated through the regular season. But, it appears that Hernandez was not even permitted to watch his former team play.

There were no prior concerns that Hernandez was suicidal, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Correction told ABC News. The center studies a progressive degenerative brain disease found in some athletes who have experienced repetitive brain trauma.

Yet, despite the obvious tenderness and very real humanity those moments represented, it seemed like the former New England Patriot long ago had departed.

Hernandez's body is at a Boston-area funeral home, but services for the Bristol, Connecticut, native likely will be held elsewhere.

November 6, 2012: Hernandez's daughter, Avielle Janelle Hernandez, is born on his birthday. That year he got engaged to his girlfriend, Shayanna Jenkins, who was pregnant with their first child, a baby girl they named Avielle.

Last Friday, Hernandez was acquitted of murdering Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in a July 16, 2012 shooting.

Hernandez's older brother, Jonathan "DJ" Hernandez, meanwhile, took to Facebook on Thursday to wish his mother, Terri Hernandez, happy birthday.

On one of Jonathan Hernandez's visits to the prison, his younger brother walked in wearing a two-piece gray prison suit with a white T-shirt underneath.

BOSTON (AP) - Aaron Hernandez's death in prison - just days after the former National Football League star was cleared of additional murder charges - remains shrouded in mystery. He was also found not guilty of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a unsafe weapon and witness intimidation, but he was convicted of unlawful possession of a gun. A judge added four to five years to Hernandez's prison sentence for that charge, separate from his existing life sentence.

Hernandez was already serving a life sentence when he was acquitted.

The suicide stunned those who knew Hernandez.

"The family of Aaron Hernandez has made a decision to donate to this study so that we could possibly help other young men who decide to play football, and to help further that cause, and also possibly shed light and more evidence on this case", Baez said.

The Worcester County district attorney's office and the Correction Department are investigating. In May 2015, Hernandez agreed to be a lookout for an inmate who fought another inmate at the prison where he died.

His legal team will also be conducting its own investigation, Baez said.

And the state medical examiner's office declined to comment on the status of its autopsy or the release of Hernandez's body.
