Thirty-four players came to meet with President Trump on Wednesday, as opposed to an estimated 50 who came to see Obama.

As we can see above, a similar pattern emerged in 2004 and 2005 when substantially fewer players showed up to the White House as compared to the 2002 visit following the franchise's first Super Bowl win.

President Barack Obama during a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Thursday, April 23, 2015, to honor the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots for their Super Bowl XLIX victory. The Times' photos showed the 2015 team filling up the White House staircases while no players were standing on the steps in its photo of Wednesday's event. On Wednesday, they were seated on the South Lawn.

While some players stated they were skipping the Trump event for political reasons, the team suggested that because it has won two Super Bowls in three seasons, the lack of novelty of a White House visit might have kept some players away.

Trump noted the kerfuffle and tweeted about the New York Times on Thursday morning.

The Patriots posted another photo to their Twitter account Wednesday showing Patriots staff and players who visited the White House Wednesday, among other personnel.

The Patriots later said that the photos shown were misleading, and took to Twitter to explain the difference in the two photos. In 2012, however, the media industry generally blasted Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas for staying home during the Stanley Cup championship team's visit to the Obama White House because he disagreed with the policies of the federal government. "James said, however, that the size of the Patriots' full delegation for each trip to the White House has been roughly the same".

The New York Times obtained a reaction from a Patriots' rep about the matter of size.

The Times tweeted an update saying that the Pats told them fewer players attended this year, but the total delegation was about the same.

That's when George W. Bush was president.
