Chaffetz may not finish final term in Congress

A few days after the incident, former independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin said in an online "ask me anything" Reddit chat session that he would possibly challenge Chaffetz in 2018.

He declined to investigate Trump's massive business interests despite promises to ferociously continue investigating Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton following an investigation into her use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state.

But the pending retirement of the Republican chairman of one of the most influential congressional committees has prompted Democrats to declare victory.

"After more than 1,500 nights away from my home, it is time".

"I may run again for public office, but not in 2018", he wrote.

"After seeing his district and his state first-hand, I can certainly understand why it is calling him back", Oversight Committee Ranking Member Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, said of Chaffetz's decision to not seek re-election in a statement yesterday.

Chaffetz, who heads the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, told the Wall Street Journal that he's still mulling over the timing of when he would leave Washington, DC. Instead, Chaffetz said he wants to spend time with his family, return to the private sector and potentially run for Utah governor. Chaffetz cited his family as his reason for not seeking re-election and clarified he had no ulterior motives for leaving office. While someone like Jason Chaffetz has no worries about losing his own seat, the idea of being in the powerless House minority has to hold zero appeal to him. On Tuesday, Democrat Jon Ossoff fell a few percentage points short of an outright victory amid an 18-candidate scramble in Georgia's 6th Congressional District . Does this mean the Third District will stay red in 2018?

If Chaffetz runs for Utah governor, however, he won't necessarily be the front-runner, Karpowitz said.

Representative Chaffetz said he chose to announce his intention not to run for re-election now to allow fellow Republicans the time necessary to develop the essential groundwork and campaign apparatus necessary to win the race. Before last year's election, Chaffetz had vowed he would investigate Clinton "for years" if she won the presidency over Trump.

In 2015, he launched a bid for House speaker after Rep. John Boehner resigned from Congress. Paul Ryan was eventually elected to the post after a tumultuous process. Articles featured include reporting on world news, politics, finance, health, entertainment and technology.
