The record-setting assist came during the fourth quarter on a kick out to Semaj Christon, and Westbrook got a standing ovation despite being on the visiting team. It's a footnote that the shot eliminated the Denver Nuggets from playoff contention.

OSCAR ROBERTSON'S National Basketball Association record of 41 triple-doubles in a single season had stood for 55 years but Russell Westbrook changed that.

Westbrook's performance gave him a triple-double with at least 50 points for the third time this season. The former UCLA Bruins ended the night with historical numbers and defeated the Denver Nuggets with a 3 point dagger.

While congratulating Westbrook on the record, LeBron James said, "There's just certain things you never think you're going to see or never think is going to be broken, and that's one of those records, man".

D'Angelo Russell's three-pointer on the buzzer lifted the Los Angeles Lakers to a 110-109 victory over Minnesota, despite Karl-Anthony Towns' 40 points and 21 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

"I admire Westbrook's all-around command of the game".

Then, those same fans stood in stunned silence after watching Westbrook score his team's final 15 points, including the game-winner after Steven Adams took the inbounds pass from Kyle Singler with 2.9 seconds left and dished to Westbrook, whose long jumper ringed through the iron as the horn sounded.

Known for his relentless style and frenetic energy, Westbrook was one of six players to start every game this season.

"I practice that shot everyday pregame", he said. "I'm so thankful to play the game I love".

"My motto is 'why not?', and I always stick by it, regardless of what people say what's possible and not possible".

Harden, though, went on to laud Westbrook's triple-double feat for the season.

"I could not be happier for him".

Danilo Gallinari had a season-high 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Nikola Jokic scored 23 points for Denver.

Westbrook now averages a triple double, being only the second player to do this, with 31.9 points, 10.4 assists, and 10.7 rebounds per game.

Westbrook caught the ball in the frontcourt with less than two seconds left and launched from 36 feet away, adding one more magical moment in a season that could very well end in an MVP award. With the loss, Denver fell two games (and tiebreakers) back of the Portland Trail Blazers with just two games remaining in the season.
