Prince William has enlisted Lady Gaga in his campaign to persuade people to be more open about mental health issues. He said it is time "to break open the taboo".

Disclosing that he has spoken to a professional about his mental health, the 32-year-old described how he only began to address his grief when he was 28 after feeling "on the verge of punching someone" and facing anxiety during royal engagements.

The issue of mental health hits especially close to home for Harry, who recently revealed he struggled with mental health issues for years following his mother's death.

"She created the new template, the new orthodoxy", said Ellis Cashmore, a visiting professor of sociology at Aston University and the author of "Elizabeth Taylor: A Private Life for Public Consumption".

"Prince Harry sharing how he needed support to cope with losing his mother shows both how normal it is to go through a tough time and how much opening up can help", CEO Simon Gunning said in an email. The cause aims to raise awareness about mental illness and focuses on removing the negative stereotypes surrounding it-similar to Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation that also combats bullying.

Harry said he feels that Princess Di would be "overwhelmed and hugely encouraged by the fact that the United Kingdom, not known for wanting to talk about mental health issues, has suddenly got to this point and it's only taken a year, specifically this week has really energized the whole nation, which is fantastic".

"There's a lot of shame attached to mental illness", Lady Gaga tells Prince William in the video posted on the royal family's Facebook page.

In a short blog, published yesterday, Dr Theresa Shaw used recent media attention on the mental health sector to highlight the role of its nursing staff.

"One of the things he talked about was the value of having someone to listen to you, he said he was not seeking advice, he just wanted someone to listen", noted Dr Shaw.
