Tej Bahadur Yadav, an Indian soldier who made a video complaining about poor quality of food, has been dismissed from service by the Border Security Force (BSF). A senior Ministry official had said Yadav had crossed the line of discipline and broken service rules by posting the second video.

However, in the fairly detailed account by the BSF, one factor stood out: there was little information on the specific charges levelled by Yadav, 41, who stands to lose his pension too after 20 years of service if an appeal does not overturn the dismissal.

Yadav has the option of appealing to a higher paramilitary tribunal within three months.

According to the officials, Tej Bahadur Yadav was sacked by the border guarding force on the basis of a report of a staff court of inquiry.

Yadav, who has served for almost 20 years in the armed forces, had in January stirred a row after he shared videos on social media alleging poor quality of food being served to jawans and corruption in the system.

He was facing inquiry on various charges, including indiscipline.

Yadav (40) belonged to the BSF's 29th battalion. "I was dismissed from BSF today, but I still have proof with me about the video I had posted on the poor quality of food".

Yadav, in January this year, had alleged in his video post that bad quality food was being served to the soldiers. His wife had moved the Delhi High Court after the BSF seized Mr Yadav's mobile phone and transferred him, alleging that he was missing. For lunch, we get "dal" (pulses) which only has "haldi" (turmeric) and salt.

His video raised a very important question that the Army that works on the border in harsh conditions, gets such kind of food. "I appeal to all to ask the prime minister why I am being tortured", he said in the video.

During the court of enquiry, Yadav's colleagues did not support his claim of sub-standard food at the camps. "My mobiles were seized, but I have no regrets", he said, adding, "I will keep fighting".
