Bashar al Assad's UK-born wife should lose her British citizenship if she continues to publicly back his "barbarous" regime, the Liberal Democrats say.

Asma Assad, 41, has an Instagram account, where pictures of her and her husband are posted with the hashtag #WeLoveYouBashar.

Asma al-Assad is already barred from travelling to Europe since 2012.

It makes no sense whatsoever.

Tom Brake, a Liberal Democrat member of Parliament, on April 16 accused Asma al-Assad of using her worldwide profile to defend "a barbarous regime".

The photos are a stark contrast to the ones on news channels showing Syrian children lying dead in the streets after choking on poison gas that the US and its allies said was unleashed by her dictator husband.

British MPs have put forward a suggestion to deprive Asma Assad - who hails from west London - of her British citizenship, after one of her social media posts that blamed western media of lying and propaganda stirred too much controversy, according to the Sunday Times. Her parents still live in Acton, the Express reports.

The party is also reportedly pushing for a debate considering Asma Assad's citizenship next week in the House of Commons.

The Liberal Democrats' foreign affairs spokesman Tom Brake said that the first lady's vocal support for the man who has been branded an "arch-terrorist" by Britain can not be ignored.

British Members of Parliament are calling on London to deprive the first-lady of the Syrian regime, Asma Assad, of her British citizenship.

"This is a barbarous regime, yet Asma Assad has continued to use her global profile to defend it, even after the chemical weapons atrocity", he said. Withdrawing her passport would not leave her stateless, however, because she is thought to be a dual British-Syrian national.

Assad speaks during an interview with Yahoo News on February 10.

"These offers included guarantees of safety and protection for my children, and even financial security. It was never about my well being or my children - it was a deliberate attempt to shatter people's confidence in their president".
