A second child was badly hurt by the gunman, who is said by the authorities to have had a criminal history that included weapons charges and domestic violence that predated his brief marriage to the slain teacher.

"As a result of this tragedy, North Park Elementary will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and Del Vallejo Middle School will serve as a temporary location to provide counseling and support services to North Park staff members, parents and students on Tuesday and Wednesday."

Counselors have been made available at a nearby school for Smith's students and coworkers.

With Monday's San Bernardino incident, the USA has had 12 school shootings this year, on track to match last year's tally.

A gunman opened fire in a California school classroom, killing a teacher and an eight-year-old boy before turning the gun on himself.

"She effectively kept her private life private", Burguan said.

The young boy was not in school Monday but when Valles heard the shooting was in Smith's classroom, she said she nearly passed out.

Unlike the 2015 massacre, carried out by a radicalized Muslim couple in what authorities described as an act of terrorism, police said the latest shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between the suspect and his wife. One of her friends was hit, she added, pointing to her abdomen. "It was awesome and it was blessed for me", Cabrera said. "That makes a happy marriage".

Karen Smith (right) and husband Cedric Anderson (left), had separated just weeks after their January 2017 wedding.

The page also had several photos of his wedding to Smith and their honeymoon among the scenic red rocks of Sedona, Arizona.

Police say the couple had been separated for at least a month.

Irma Skyes said she heard whispers of Anderson's dark side during the four years he dated her daughter.

Mrs Sykes said her daughter had taught Sunday school for years before joining North Park School. He had other motives.

"It appears that he had been making efforts to contact her and have her come back home, and she was resistant to that. She decided she needed to leave him".

"I sat there just crying", Laurie Swoboda, a San Bernardino resident who attended the vigil said.

School officials said they had no indication that the San Bernardino school shooter was "agitate".

Unlike the phone of December 2 shooter Syed Rizwan Farook, which was hacked only when the Federal Bureau of Investigation hired a company to override the encryption, police do not expect to have difficulty obtaining information from Anderson's and Smith's phones, Burguan said.

His wife was killed and two students were critically injured before he turned the gun on himself.

Fifteen special-needs students and two adult teacher assistants were in the classroom with Smith during the attack, in which 10 shots were fired, police said. An 8-year-old boy died and another student is in stable condition. That boy, whose name has not been released, is expected to recover.

In a tweet, the San Bernardino Police Department said there was a "great showing" from the community at the event. People pray before placing flowers at a sidewalk memorial to the teacher and student who were shot to death Monday at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, Calif., Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

After hundreds of students were evacuated from the school, panicked parents had to wait hours before reuniting with their children. "He started reading and doing long math", Valles said.

Once a major rail hub and citrus producer, the city of 216,000 people filed for bankruptcy in 2012 after struggling to pay its employees despite steep cuts to the budget.

An overflow crowd gathered at sunset at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in San Bernardino to mourn and pray for the victims and survivors of Monday's shooting.
